FTA Meets: Huda El Mufti

Growing up we all have dreams and aspirations, some of us perhaps hope to become designers, architects maybe even pilots, but the truth is not all dreams are realized. It takes hard work, a lot of passion and the strength to persevere in spite of the obstacles, all of which are characteristics evident in our June cover featuring rising Egyptian Actress Huda El Mufti, who made her own dreams a reality. Today Huda has established her seat on the industry table, with a repertoire of much-loved roles and characters under her belt since her 2020 debut. Huda’s drive and work ethic serves as the perfect role model for young actors and creatives trying to break through in an otherwise challenging landscape.

For someone who has forged her own path at a young age, we asked Huda about what type of support if any, would benefit young aspiring actresses who wish to navigate the same career path?

“As an actress, I firmly believe that young girls should be empowered to pursue their dreams of acting, despite any challenges they may face in the industry. It’s time to normalize this choice and support these aspiring actresses in their journey.  As an actress, I believe it is crucial for society to lend a helping hand to those striving to achieve their goals, particularly their loved ones. Family and friends play a vital role in this process.”

There is no doubt in Huda’s tenacity and love for her craft, but was it always easy for her to find inspiration and play so many diverse and dynamic critically acclaimed roles?

“Upon receiving the script, I read it with great focus, getting myself in the world of the character and envisioning her true nature and motivations. I carefully write down every detail related to my character. Then, I delve into extensive research to uncover any additional details and complexities. I may also consult with experts to ensure a comprehensive understanding of its lifestyles and behavior. That’s how I get inspired.”

And while we were on the topic of inspiration, we wanted to know if there are any icons Huda looks up to and why?

“There isn’t anyone in particular. In fact, I find inspiration in every person I meet who works tirelessly to break barriers and realize their dreams.”

Achieving work/life balance in a career known to be both competitive, time-consuming, and challenging is not always easy but how does Huda manage?

“Well, I always try to find some private time for myself while at work, and vice versa. I respect personal time like any other meeting or work-related activity.”

Besides being an actress Huda is also looked up to for her unique sense of fashion and taste. She shared with us her thoughts on the booming fashion industry in the region and the role that Fashion Trust Arabia plays in supporting and highlighting these up-and-coming designers.

“The growth I’ve seen in the region’s fashion business has been astounding. It’s thrilling to witness such a wide range of skills and creativity on display, and  FTA’s role in drawing attention to standout artists is a crucial one for raising the level of the competition and showcasing more talent.”

And with regards to emerging fashion designers or brands that stand out to her?

“There are a lot of brands that I like. There aren’t any that stand out to me in particular, but I do favor the ones that push the boundaries of femininity with their originality and daring designs.”

We also asked Huda what it means to be an Arab woman in the field and whether or not she feels being both an Arab and a woman can be double the challenge?

“I don’t think there’s something hard for Arab women to reach or achieve. Women are now empowered more than ever, especially in our industry. They are being empowered behind the camera as well as in front of the camera. I’m pleased that more and more works are featuring female leads.”

Finally, we wanted Huda to share with us something we don’t see on the screen and let us in on a secret.

“As an actress, I must confess that I possess a deep sensitivity that I often mask with being tough and straightforward, particularly in my professional life. Also, it truly frustrates me when people try to cut corners at work, which in turn makes me lose focus.”
