Over the past few months, I look left, I look right, and I notice that men and women alike have been using none other than their toiletry bag as a clutch! From hikes – yes, you read that right, hikes – to a night out for dinner or drinks, toiletry bags seem to be everywhere. Give me a few minutes to take this in.
I get it, the value of having a functional toiletry bag is immeasurable, especially when you’re traveling and need something to carry everything from cosmetics to skin care products. But, when did it become fashionable to rock a toiletry bag as a clutch? What have I missed? Is it strictly a MENA fashion trend that has crept up on us? Or am I just too observant?
From Louis Vuitton to Gucci – monogram designer toiletry bags haunt me. I’ve asked myself “Why would you carry a toiletry bag in public?” more than I would like to admit. Even though I am yet to come to a definite conclusion, here’s one that makes sense: Designer toiletry bags are cheaper than the pochettes, clutches and handbags that the same brands usually offer. If someone was looking to bask in all-designer glory – why wouldn’t they pick up a toiletry bag instead? After all, their function is the same and they get to save some coin.
While I personally think that rocking a toiletry bag on a night out is a fashion faux pas, I’m not here to judge your fashion choice(s). Fashion’s rule book is no longer as black and white as it used to be, so each to their own!
If you must carry a toiletry bag, go for it! However, if you’re looking for a small and functional alternative, worry not — I’ve scoured the Internet and rounded up some of my favorite Arab options (mainly pouches — I’m trying to sway you here), so you don’t have to!
