2022 has been one of the bumpiest years for fashion, between the closure of houses such as Raf Simons, the departure of Miuccia Prada as chairperson of Prada Group, the resignation of Alessandro Michele as artistic director of Gucci and a scandal at Balenciaga following a controversial campaign. However, the year ended with key moments such as the spectacular Dior menswear show in Cairo at the end of November and Chanel‘s show in Dakar a little later.

Here are  four events from 2022 and a little closer to home that we’ve chosen to highlight in our year ender.

Rami Kadi Takes Over The Metaverse

On February 2, 2022, Rami Kadi held a pioneering show at the Theatre of Digital Art in Dubai. The Lebanese-American fashion designer launched his first collection of 120 NFTs, titled Lucid Algorithms. In addition, 30 of the designer’s dresses were on display for guests to discover how he had reinterpreted NFTs as physical couture pieces. This was a world first that heralded fashion’s strong entry into the virtual world.

Bella Hadid Sprayed by Coperni

Bella Hadid’s career has taken a huge leap in 2022, and she just received the Model of the Year award from the British Fashion Council for her global impact over the past 12 months. How can we forget Bella’s big viral moment for Coperni? The white spray, projected live onto her body, and then transformed into a strapless sheath gown, was the climax of the spring-summer 2023 shows.

Valentino Pink PP

Last September, Valentino launched its Pink PP collection, “stripping the palette down to a single hue, doing more with less, maximizing expressive possibilities in the apparent lack of possibilities”. The deep-toned fuchsia which Valentino’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, custom created for his FW/22 show has since then become a color you cannot escape. At the end of October, as Valentino held a show at M7 in Doha, a number of guests honored the designer by wearing the cheerful Pink PP.

FTA Awards 2022

And yes, Fashion Trust Arabia has once again played a vital role in propelling designers from the Arab world onto the international fashion scene. Remember the names of our finalists: Siham and Sarah Albinali, Fatma Mostafa, Eilaf Osman, Kazna Asker, Burç Akyol and Artsi Ifrach. Thanks to the mentorship program they will undergo, we are confident that their already shining stars will soon illuminate the entire fashion universe.
