Three FTA Prize winners from 2020 just launched their new collections on MatchesFashion. The dynamic e-commerce platform has had an ongoing partnership with FTA, with MatchesFashion offering winners a year-long mentorship to help boost and promote their individual brands. “Our partnership with FTA has opened a new opportunity to shine a light on new and innovative designers from the MENA region,” MatchesFashion’s fashion and buying director Natalie Kingham told FTA in a previous interview. “The partnership is part of MatchesFashion’s commitment to championing emerging designers on a global level.”

“My first mentorship session with Natalie was very inspiring,” says Lebanese footwear designer Andrea Wazen, who won in the Accessories category. “She said so many things that really struck a chord and helped me in my design process. She mentioned how important it was to find your own identity and not be afraid to show it – find what differentiates you from the rest and build on that. This was actually so useful and was one of the biggest factors that influenced me into designing my heritage collection for SS21.”

Amany Shaker, whose brand Ammanii won in the Jewelry category, echoes Wazen’s words. “The whole experience in being mentored by MatchesFashion has been amazing,” says the Egyptian jewelry designer. “Their support, belief in and vision for my work have been a great boost for me. They were keen to follow up on conversations and eager to provide help from their team of experts. The access I was able to have to such help has been very valuable.”

For Omer Asim, who hails from Sudan and is based in London, and who won in the Ready-to-Wear category, the experience with MatchesFashion was particularly educational when it came to e-commerce. “I learned a great deal about the ins and outs of e-commerce – its potential pitfalls and logistics,” he says. “I learned enough to know how much I don’t know, and what it takes to execute it right.” He adds that the year-long mentorship with MatchesFashion taught him to expect the unexpected. “The best part throughout the experience was when I learned things I didn’t anticipate or think to question.”
